How To Apply For Lifeline Step By Step

1. Check If You Qualify

There are two ways to qualify. The first is through a benefit program: if you or someone in your household receives SNAP, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, or the Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit, you can apply. Residents of Tribal lands can also qualify through programs such as Tribal TANF, FDPIR or Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance.
The second way is through income. If your total household income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, you qualify even if you do not receive any benefits. For most states in 2026, that is $21,546 a year for one person or $44,550 for a family of four.
Not sure where you stand? Our 1-minute eligibility check uses your state's income limits to give you a quick estimate.
